McCain: Romney favored Iraq withdrawal

In an interview with ABC News in 2007, Romney said: "There's no question that the president and (Iraqi) Prime Minister al-Maliki have to have a series of timetables and milestones that they speak about. But those shouldn't be for public pronouncement. You don't want the enemy to understand how long they have to wait in the weeds until you're going to be gone."

While Romney has never set a public date for withdrawal, he has said that he agrees with Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, that U.S. troops could move to more of an oversight role in 2008.

McCain, for his part, has been a staunch supporter of the Iraq war and advocated more troops on the ground for years before Bush embraced that position last year and ramped up the number of U.S. forces in Iraq.

Science Faces Moral, Ethical Dilemmas

We are indeed on the slippery moral precipice or slope we have discussed previously. (See Medicin Men archives.)

But new life is for sale and a $3 billion human egg industry booms according to an AAPS release in early January 2008.

There's a new kind of brokerage firm in our new world. These are agencies that assemble databases of young women and market their eggs to customers who want a baby and can't produce one.

Some offer photographs and information about hobbies, education, and religion, along with health screening, so customers can pick the "donor."

Some do consider "donor shopping" for "designer babies" unethical, and match the donor on the basis of a few genetic traits.

The egg broker charges around $16,500, which includes the donor's fee of $4,000 or more.

Poniard Pharmaceuticals Announces Picoplatin Safety Data In Colorectal ...

Poniard Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq: PARD), a biopharmaceutical company focused on oncology, announced that it has presented safety data from a Phase 1 dose-escalation study of picoplatin, the Company's lead product candidate, at the 2008 Gastrointestinal Cancers Symposium, a meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) which is being held in Orlando, Fla.

The poster presentation included safety data from a Phase 1 study of picoplatin in combination with 5-fluorouracil (5FU) and leucovorin (LV) as a first-line treatment for metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). The Phase 1 study seeks to establish the maximum tolerated dose of picoplatin and provide information on the safety of picoplatin when combined with 5FU and LV for the treatment of colorectal cancer. Promising safety data observed from the study to date formed the basis for further development of picoplatin in our ongoing Phase 2 trial in mCRC.
